Goodbye!
Part of our classroom mission statement is, "We are a community of learners. We are self-directed and collaborative problem-solvers. We are creators, independent thinkers, and not afraid to take risks. We work hard every day to better ourselves and our world!"
These kids have embraced that mission, and each day we learned so much together. This has been an extraordinary year. I started the year thinking this would be the best year for my students; little did I know that it would turn out to be the best year for me, too. Thank you all for being part of our classroom community. You have helped to give these kids a wonderfully unique learning experience. We could not have done all these awesome things without parents supporting us. Thank you. We wrote a book together over the last week called, 'Our Awesome Year'. Each student wrote their own page, and we also added our song, logo, videos, etc. It has been uploaded to the iBooks Store, and should be available for download sometime this week-end. I will let you know when it becomes available. Please contact me if you ever need anything, or just to let me know how the kids are doing. I hope you all have a wonderful summer, and I am so looking forward to seeing what these amazing kids do in the future! Love, Mrs. Karrin Burns The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade:

Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop
is on the App Store!
We are so excited and proud to have our mood management iOS app, Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop, accepted to the App Store! Please visit the Mood Monster website to learn more and download our app on the App Store today!
We had an incredible learning experience creating this app, as we all learned to code together. We noticed a few corrections that we need to make, so I will be doing those for version 2.

#GlobalLearningBigDay
Students in our class and at Roosevelt Middle School made over 30 instructional videos to teach others how to do a variety of skills, including making animations, making and editing movies, and even about the Pythagorean Theorum. Visit the #GlobalLearningBigDay website and watch the playlist. We had a great time, and the kids did an incredible job.
Reader's workshop: Cause and effect
This week in our information circles, we talked about using compare/contrast and cause/effect relationships to make sense of information when researching a topic. In their information circles, students are thinking about:
Geology: How and why are mountains formed?
Art and artists: Why is blues music important?
Cultures around the world: How do cultures change over time?

Writer's workshop
Students began to develop original fairy tales. First, they have chosen a character, and developed the character's back story and traits. Next, they decided on a motivation: what does the character want? Students learned this week that really great fairy tale characters have trouble that becomes more trouble, and finally a happy resolution. We will publish our original fairy tales Memorial Day week!
Math: Volume, mass, and working
with 3-digit numbers
We started our last math unit this week, which will be focused mostly on adding and subtracting three-digits numbers and measurement. This week's focus was on the meanings of volume and mass, and finding sums and differences using both types of measurements. A great game for additional practice is Capture from 300 - 600.
The Lincoln Native Garden is looking terrific!
The garden is beginning to look gorgeous! This week, we've had blooms from Shooting Star, Virginia Bluebells, Eastern Red Columbine, Common Spiderwort, and Prairie Phlox. We even saw a Common Yellowthroat in the Meadow Anemone today! On the last day of school, we'd like to invite parents to come at 10:15AM (prior to the Recorder Concert at 11:00AM) to have a tour of the Lincoln Native Garden! Visit our website to learn more about this awesome native habitat.

Information circles: Art and artists, Cultures Around the World, and Geology
We continue to work in our information circles, students are working on analytic reading, and applying what they are learning to ask and answer questions. For example, the art and artists research group asked this week, 'How does art affect how we see the world?'
Students spent the week reading through their text collections with that question in mind, taking notes on ideas that would help them establish and support their view, and discussing in ideas with their group.
Students spent the week reading through their text collections with that question in mind, taking notes on ideas that would help them establish and support their view, and discussing in ideas with their group.
The question the geology group chose was, 'How do volcanoes form?'; and the Cultures Around the World Group chose, 'What are the cultural differences between Mexico and Spain?' We are still working on using our own words to rephrase information we've learned.
Next week: Creating our own Fairy Tales!
We wrapped up our fairy tale adaptions this week, and the students are excited to move into creating original fairy tales. Here is a fun adaptation of The Three Little Pigs called, 'The Three Little Jaguars' by Jack.
#GlobalLearningBigDay
We are so excited to present our inaugural #GlobalLearningBig Day on Wednesday, May 16! #GlobalLearningBigDay is an our interpretation of an online STEM 'conference' for kids to teach and learn from each other. Each student will present a skill, and the event will air on our YouTubeChannel. We are very excited to have students from Roosevelt participating in this event, also; and we hope kids around the world can learn with us!
Some presentations we have planned are:
- Making a Kahoot! for Beginners
- Getting Started with Tynker
- Make an Awesome Presentation with Keynote
- What is a Native Garden, and Why are they Important?
See our Events page for a list of accepted presentations, and our #GlobalLearningBigDay website for more information.

Math: How many miles? Addition, Subtraction, and the number System
As we move into our final unit of the year, I am excited to say that these students are developing excellent mathematical thinking and number sense. Math is always one of our favorite times of the day. We took our time moving through the rather difficult fractions unit, and we will begin exploring (and reviewing) some of the following ideas this week:
- Solving problems involving measurement of liquid volume and mass
- Adding and subtracting fluently
- Describing, analyzing, and comparing strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers

Weather Around the World update
Students continue to gather daily weather data for Weather Around the World. Students studied the data they've collected so far and made a few determinations about the climate in their chosen cities. When our collection is complete, we will chart and graph our data to compare the climates of the cities.
Writer's workshop: Adapting fairy tales
We've been working hard on our adapted fairy tales! Students are using their narrative writing checklists to assist during writing, and here are some fairy tale specific tips:
Reader's workshop: Information circles
As we move through our research unit, we are focusing on cross-text synthesis to better understand our topic. Students are getting a lot of practice identifying subtopics that relate to their ideas in certain texts, and are improving their abilities to use text evidence to support ideas. Click here for a helpful continuum for informational reading.

Native garden Spring clean-up
We enjoyed the beautiful weather this week and cleaned up the Lincoln Native Garden at the same time. The students clipped back dead plant tops to reveal the new growth underneath, put stones neatly back on the path, picked up trash, pulled weeds, and even thinned some over-zealous Obidient Plant. We are excited to see the garden coming to life again!
What makes a whole?
Where do fractions lie on the number line?
We had a terrific time playing Fraction Cookies this week! The game helps kids visualize fractions like halves, thirds, sixths, and wholes. The kids worked to place fractions on a number line, showing equivalent fractions and even fractions greater than 1. We are really excited about fractions!
Erin's Law Presentation May 2, 2018
Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193 was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades pre-K through 12. District 90 researched best practices and programs for delivering this instruction. We reviewed several recommended programs and visited several area school districts to observe programs in action. We are very pleased to share that Victor Pacini will be visiting Lincoln School on May 2 to deliver his program entitled, Be Seen and Heard©, a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program. Below is a link to information regarding his presentation. Please contact Mr. Godfrey if you have other specific questions or if you prefer your child not participate.

App development: coding games
The App Dev group is working in Tynker to create games. Here is the start of a deep sea game by Maddie, Anna, and Miya.
Writer's workshop: adapting fairy tales
We've been studying fairy tales in prepartaion for the students to adapt one of their own. This week, we looked closer at the components of a fairy tale: the backstory, the improtatnt moment, the trouble, and the solution. Students have chosen one fairy tale to adapt, and have begun their stories!
Reader's workshop:
synthesizing information from different sources
As we work in our information circles, students are learning how to synthesize (or combine) information learned from the selection of texts they read. One of the Common Core State Standards for 3rd Grade indicates students should learn how to, 'Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.' This is something we work on weekly in our discussions and response to reading work.
Fractions
Students worked to divide different shapes into equal parts, and then used addition to show which fractions combined to equal a whole. We are also exploring fractions on a number line. At home, students can practice fractions with the game, Fraction Cookie.
Do Whatever it Takes to help the Earth!

Weather around the world
What type of weather is expected during a particular season? What is the climate in a particular region? What are some potential weather hazards, and what can humans do to reduce the impact of these weather hazards? We will be taking a closer look at these issues as we work on our Weather Around the World project. Students chose 30 cities across the globe for which we will be gathering and charting data over the next 30 days. Check out our project, and see what cities your child will be tracking with his or her team.

Math: Fair shares and fractions on number lines
We started Unit 6 this week, which focuses on fractions. I think this is a fun unit, and the students will really enjoy it. However, next week we are taking the math portion of PARCC, so we will continue where we left off after we finish testing. Please see the Family Letter for the first investigation, Sharing Brownies.
Writer's workshop: Fairy tales
We began exploring our next writing unit: Fairy Tales! The kids are already very excited to adapt known fairy tales and create new ones. Since PARCC reading/English Language Arts testing is complete, we will resume reader's and writer's workshops next week.
The Lincoln Native Garden is awakening!
As the garden continues to wake up, we will be working on our plan to share our resources with another organization. We are so excited to share some seedlings and what we've learned with others.
Reading: Information circles
We've begun our next unit in reading, which is focused on 'research clubs'. The students have chosen a topic based upon their interests, and then formed research clubs (information circles) around those topics. The class decided they wanted to study animals, coding, and sports.
Students spent some time this week creating essential questions to study in their group, and will vote on one question to study each week. This week, the students decided upon these questions to explore:
Sports: "If you are a good teammate, does that mean you are good at the game?"
Animals: "Why do animals become extinct?"
Coding: "How has coding changed the way we see the world?"
Together, we will choose resources for the research, and each student will have a role (similar to literature circles). At the end of the week, students will individually do a written response their readings and discussion.

Writer's workshop: persuasive writing
Students have worked hard over the last few weeks to understand how using strong statements, facts, examples, and observations can persuade an audience. Students published their letters and speeches today, as well as presented them in class. I am very impressed with their hard work! Please see your child's Seesaw account to check out his/her text. Here are a few good examples!
Math: multiplying by 10
We've been exploring multiplying by 10 while finding multiples of 10 and solving multi-step problems. The kids are very much improving their multiplication and division skills. One we particularly like to practice is called 'Seeing Numbers': the students are shown an image of dots for a short amount of time, and write as many equations as they can to represent the problem.
For math practice at home, your child can play math games on Pearson Realize (especially Multiplication Compare, Factor Pairs, and Missing Factors) . When we return from break, we will finish this unit, and start the next after PARCC testing.

persuasive writing is almost complete
The students are working on finishing up thier persuasive speeches, and are looking forward to presenting them next week. As we wrap up this unit, students are editing and revising their work. I think they are excited for the next unit, which is focused on fairy tales. Students will be writing their own, and they are really excited!
App dev: we are sooo close!
Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop is coming along! This week, we changed the iPad icon (left), the team finished up writing descriptions and finding backgrounds for the yoga poses, and created calming music to play in the background of the app while the user is doing yoga. The kids are trying to write code to add the music, as well as code a timer.
Westward Expansion
Literature Circle final projects
The students created some very nice work to showcase what they know about the Westward Expansion novel they read. Students chose to do animation, movies, and even a Kahoot! quiz. Please check out your child's work on Seesaw. In the coming days, I will post all work to the Westward Expansion project website. Until then, here are a few really creative submissions!
Math: Solving division problems
We continued to work on multilication and division problems this week, with an emphasis on division. The kids are learning how to think about missing factor problems as division, and use strategies like breaking an array up in to parts or using known facts as a basis to solve unknowns, Next week, we will start the final investigation of the unit: Multiplying by Multiples of 10.
