App development team
We've been working very hard this week on learning to code using Swift Playgrounds, Tynker, and Tickle. Next week, we are meeting with our New York mentors to share our progress and get their input. We are excited! Here is a snippet of code that Adrien created that will hopefully go in our app.

Native American Project
Students continue to gather research on their Native American tribe. Currently, their work is not visible outside of District 90, but will be published on December 22. Please check out the Native Americans of the Great Lakes, and ask your child what area he/she is working on!

Does yoga help improve mood?
Join the Chat team as they discuss yoga with special guest David Driscoll, yoga practitioner and instructor. David also helped the App Dev team (pictured above) with yoga poses to help kids manange emotions. We will use these poses for our app!

App development team collaboration
and update
We are so fortunate to collaborate with 8th grade students at MS442 School for Innovation in Brooklyn to work on our app. These terrific young web and app developers will be mentoring us as we work through app creation process.
The App Dev team had a pretty busy week! Take a look as they talk about their experiences and what they learned below. We are slowly, but surely, moving towards our goal.
Writing
Students are working hard to incorporate strategies such as compare/contrast, pros/cons, cause and effect, and more into informational writing. Students are working to elaborate, using graphic features like checklists, definitions, questions, and more to engage the reader. Check out Jack's ideas below!
Reading:
Having conversations about our reading
Students spent time this week with a reading partner, reading informational texts and having conversations about the important parts. Many took notes about what they were reading in order to have accurate discussions. Students used this exercise to practice having conversations with themselves as they read to aid comprehension.
Math
This week, we thought a lot about addition, subtraction. Students represented the place value of numbers using the Sticker Station as a context, and find equivalent ways to show quantities with hundreds, tens, and ones. They solved addition and subtraction problems that involved combinations with a sum of 100. Students then used 1,000 Charts to locate numbers. They were introduced to Collection Cards as a context for addition and subtraction. They also built a foundation for rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. To practice these concepts at home, play Go Collecting and Close to 100.

How are humans hurting the environment, and what can we do about it?
Our very special guest this week is Bridget Bulthaup, and educator with The Conservation Foundation and geologist at AECOM.

Science: Native Garden iBook
Teams have been busy over the last few weeks identifying ways the environment affects the Lincoln Native Garden, how the plants adapt to changes, and possible solutions. Next, we will incorporate all presentations into one format to publish in a multi-touch iBook. Click here or the image below to see one example of student work!
App development team update:
Mood Monster
The kids are working very hard to learn coding. Not only are they learning to code, but they are working to design and develop a useful product! It is hard and serious work. The next few months are critical in our app development process! Several students created characters for the app, but Anna's 'Mood Monster' was voted to be the representative. Congratulations to Anna, who worked so hard to create and digitize her character!
How did Native Americans influence modern society and culture?
We are studying Native Americans of the Great Lakes region and their influence on modern society and culture. The tribes we will focus on over the next several weeks are the Potawatomi, Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa, and Sauk (Fox). It will be helpful if, in your travels around the area, you point out Native American influences: for example, places named for the Native Americans which once were settled there: the Fox River Valley; Ottawa, Illinois. Please take a look at the Native Americans of the Great Lakes website which describes the project in detail.
Where are they???
We enjoyed our Mystery Skype this week! Ask your student where the other class was, and what clues the students used to identify the location.
Reading to learn; writing to teach
Our focus for the next several weeks continues to be informational reading and writing. We focused this week on how expository texts teach us, and how we can use that information to spark conversations and teach others what we've learned. Students also learned that occasionally pausing while reading and reviewing what was learned is a great way to build comprehension.
In writing, students learned to 'tell what they know over their fingers': students chose a topic, then identfied five things they know about their topic. These five things will become subtopics and chapters, and the basis of their informational text.

Travel stories and collections
Our math unit focuses on counting and quantity, place value and the structure of the base-10 number system, the meaning of operations with whole numbers, the development of computational fluency, and generalizations about numbers and operations. Throughout this unit, students will work to understand and expand their knowledge of place value and the number system to 1,000; and adding and subtracting accurately and efficiently.
