Westward Expansion literature circles
The students began their first literature circles this week, and the topic is Westward Expansion. The students will be learning all about the trip west on the Oregon Trail. Students received one of three novels: Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie: the Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell, 1847; Dear Levi: Letters From the Overland Trail; or Westward Home: Joshua's Oregon Trail Diary. We are all looking forward to this novel study!
Our published informational texts!
We've published our informational texts! Please check your child's Seesaw account to read his or her excellent book. Here are some outstanding examples below. Up next: persuasive writing!
How did the Native Americans influence our modern communities and culture?
We have wrapped up our study of Native Americans and how they have influenced our modern culture. Unfortunately, the kids have a bit of work left to do. I'd like them to get a better understanding about how the Native American way of life had such a lasting affect on our culture today. The students made their movies and wrote their research, but I asked them to revisit this on Monday. Until then, check out their work here.
How does coding help us in life?
The Chat team welcomed Carl Bade to our classroom this week to talk about the importance of coding. Tune in to The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade every Friday. Don't forget to subscribe to The Chat via Apple Podcasts and SoundCloud.

Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop update
We are working hard on the specifics of our app: we are retaking all the photographs in front of a green screen so we can add a yoga studio background, and we finished the mood icons. Here is our app (as it is currently) simulated on an iPhone.
Tetrominoes and area
We began to explore area this week, and are excited to learn more. The students had lots of fun working with tetrominoes (a geometric shape made of four squares) to solve problems. Students will use a variety of hands-on methods in the coming weeks to investigate the principle of area.

Welcome back!
Happy New Year, and welcome back! I am so excited to get back to school and be together again. Here are some things that are coming up in the near future:
- Social Studies: we will finish our Native American Project by editing our green screen movies that explain how the Native Americans of the Great Lakes region have influenced our modern communities and culture. If you have not checked out your child’s work on this project, please do so here. Each student studied one tribe with his/her group, but had his/her own research to present on his/her page. Ask your child which tribe and topic your child studied.
- Science: we will begin studying forces and interactions near the end of January, and our studies will include a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry to see a simple machines exhibit.
- Writing: we are finishing up our informational writing, and move into persuasive writing the week of January 22.
- Reader’s Workshop: students will continue to learn skills and strategies together as a group, then practice analyzing and responding to a variety of texts in a small group model using literature and information circles. Our next Unit of Study is Character Studies. Our small group work from next week through February will focus on Westward Expansion. After, we will choose texts based upon three areas of student interest (from student feedback).
- Math: we have begun Unit 4, and the students have the opportunity for a lot of hands-on work and movement in this unit. Our first investigation focused on understanding the concept of perimeter of polygons. Next week, students will expand the concept to begin to understand area.
- Inquiry and Exploration: The Communications team remains curious and will continue producing The Chat. We are looking forward to an exciting second half of the year with lots of great guests! The App Development team will continue to work to produce our app, Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop! Students will also have the opportunity to switch groups at the end of January, if they choose.
This is us creating.
I am so proud of these self-directed, driven, collaborative, and curious kids! The atmosphere in our classroom is very active and enthusiastic.
Field trip:
Museum of Science and Industry
The Third Grade classes are kicking off a unit on Simple Machines with a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on Tuesday, January 23. I sent a permission slip home this week. Please return as soon as possible! If you are interested in chaperoning, please let me know- we need 4-5 parents to accompany us.
The Chat welcomes
Newberry Award-winning author
Steve Sheinkin
The Chat team was very happy to secure a last-minute interview with Newberry Award winning author, Steve Sheinkin! Mr. Sheinkin (author of many children and young adult books such as Abigail Adams, Pirate of the Carribean and Abraham Lincoln, Pro Wrestler) was visiting Lincoln on his book tour.

Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop
The App Dev team worked on a few things this week: first, the team had to decide whether or not we would charge money for the app or would it be free. We decided free is best. We may also raise money at the time of release for a children's charity (via Crowdrise), but that will be decided later.
Also, the team designed custom icons for each mood and chose a font for the app. I am currently working in Xcode to write the code to match the specifications the students produce in Swift Playgrounds and Tynker.

Perimeter and polygons
The kids are having a very good time discovering perimeter. This week, we talked about what perimeter is, accurate measurement, and distinguishing features of polygons. See Nolan's example of figuring perimeter below. Next week, we will begin to investigate area.
