The App Development Team update
The App Development Team has developed a preliminary prototype for their app(click the image to see)! In two weeks, we will have a yoga instructor visit our class to suggest poses for each of the emotions.
A few of the students have completed the Learn to Code exercises on Swift Playgrounds, and are working on some real coding. A.J. and Kaz are working to code the 'Continue' button on the home screen. Writer's workshop
Students finished their narrative writing piece this week! Some wrote it by hand; others typed their work. Students will share their writing with you at conferences next week.
Each unit of writing instruction begins with a pre-teaching assessment (a 'cold write'), and ends with a post-teaching assessment. Together, we compare what was learned and what should be focused on next. This week, students completed the narrative post-teaching assessment and the informational pre-teaching assessment. On Monday, we will begin our unit on informational writing, which will continue until January. Reader's workshop:

App Development Team:
Coding with Swift and creating prototypes
The team has been working hard on Swift Playgrounds using the Learn to Code curriculum from Apple. Each student is working at his/her own pace. Kaz is a coding master, and has finished Learn to Code 1, and will move into Learn to Code 2 next week!
The App Dev team is also working on prototyping their app and researching new names. They've narrowed down their target market (kids, ages 6 -10), and are thinking of appealing names and designs for that group.
This project addresses many Grade 3 standards in Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.

Reader's workshop: Reading to learn
This week, we've begun investigating non-fiction texts. Students worked to examine text features to determine, 'What is this book about?'. Students also read to find main ideas and details in informational texts. Reading groups worked on questioning and vocabulary the last two weeks.
Math: collecting and sorting data
This week, we spent time collecting and sorting data from our class and Mrs. McCole's class. The students selected a question to ask, collected answers, sorted it into categories, and explained what their data showed.

App Team and Communications Team update
The Communications team is working hard to contact and book guests, and write questions for our Season 2 premier of The Chat with Mrs. Burn's Third Grade on October 20! In addition, members of the team are also creating a new logo and theme music for the podcast. We are excited!
The App Development team has started lessons in coding using Swift Playgrounds. Students are working at different paces, but most worked on commands, sequences, functions, and loops this week. Our next steps will be starting to prototype our app, getting the user interface designed, and testing ideas.
Writer's workshop
Students continue to work on their final text in the narrative writing unit. We are currently in the revising stage, and will publish our pieces soon. The kids have been woring very hard improving their lead and heart of the story with dialogue, thoughts and feelings, and action. Our next unit is informational writing, and we will begin that on October 30.
Reader's workshop
We've completed our first unit of study, and will begin our next unit on Monday, We will be studying non-fiction texts in our unit titled, 'Reading to learn: Grasping Main Ideas and Text structures. Students are also into their second week of their small group novel study. This week, our focus was on vocabulary and questioning.
Math: What's my rule?
The kids are learning all about collecting and organizing data, and we've been having fun this week playing 'What's my rule?' The students also learned about and practiced reading and displaying data on a bar chart and pictograph. Students are welcome to work on the game center of Pearson Realize at home...each child knows their log-in information.
How does the environment influence
plants and animals?
Students have been thinking this week about how the environment affects the traits of plants and animals. For example, we investigated the Lincoln Native Garden and made observations about the plants in areas with lots of water and little water. We compared what we saw in our own garden to the plants and environment at the Botanic Garden. How is the prairie like our native garden, and how is it different? We are writing a collaborative iBook to publish within the next few weeks.
We had a great time at the Chicago Botanic Garden on Thursday. Thank you so much to parent volunteers Mr. Bade, Mrs. Bozarth, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Stierwalt, and Mrs. Murphy.

Coming October 20:
The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade!
(Season 2 premiere)
The team has been working very hard to develop our first episode of the new season! Our essential question is, 'What is art, and is it important?' Since it is the first show, I will guide the team through the creation and production of this one. However, they will be mostly on their own after this, with me acting as advisor. We are trying to contact some very special guests, and are very excited for the first podcast! Be sure to subscribe to The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade on iTunes (Apple Podcasts).
Writer's workshop: The writing process
We are almost finished with our narrative writing unit! This week, each student chose another seed idea to write about for a final product. Student's will be their own 'job captain; for this piece, using everything they've learned so far to produce their best piece of writing. We talked a lot about the writing process: generating ideas, rough draft, revising, editing, and publishing. Students began writing their rough drafts today, and the piece should be published on October 23.
The App Develoment Team Update
The App Developmemt Team generated many ideas for a problem to solve, and finally settled on one great idea to prototype: an app that helps kids manage emotions.
Reader's workshop
We are almost finished with our first reader's workshop unit, Building a Powerful Reading Life. Next week, we will complete the unit with a final lesson on questioning, and review some of the strategies we've discussed. We will start Unit 2: Reading to Learn- Grasping Main Ideas and Text Structures next. Click here to download a copy of the Narrative Reading Learning Progression for 3rd Grade, which students will be using this year to check reading comprehension.
Also, students received their first novel and assignent for reading groups. Reading groups meet once a week, and work on a variety of skills and strategies to improve fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Visit from last year's Communications and App Development Teams
Students from last year's Communications and App Development Teams were kind enough to visit our class this week to give advice, input, and share wisdom with this class of beginning podcasters and app developers. The new kids learned a lot from this experienced and supportive group!
Order your class tee-shirts by October 11!
Our student designed tee-shirt is ready and available to order via Mrs. Burns's Class Media Store! Ordering closes on October 11; Shirts will be delivered to our classroom near the end of October. Thank you for supporting this student project! We have a lot a budding entrepreneurs in our class...they have already come out with suggestions for an entire line of products they want to produce!
Math: Data and Graphs
The students did a nice job on the Unit 1: Multiplication and Divison assessment. Please see your child's Seesaw account for his or her test results. We've just started Unit 2, which is data and graphs. The students are learning to sort and display data into categories. We had a terrific time sharing and discussing ways to sort data, and look forward to continuing this unit over the next few weeks.
Spelling: Words Their Way
Spelling words are here! After we assessed all of the students in early September, the students were sorted into groups depending on the spelling skills that need to be developed. I sent a spelling sheet home for the kids to work on, and they will keep a copy at school. Students should choose activities from the list below in order to bulid spelling knowledge. We will have a short assessment every other Friday, but students will receive words every week. There is nothing to hand in at school...these are just activities in order to practice spelling at home. For those of you that have forgotten or did not have a child in 2nd grade at Lincoln, here is what the kids should be doing a few times a week:
Spelling activities for home
1. Re-write all the spelling words on cards. Sort them into categories (for example, CVC, CVVC, CVCe). Can you sort them more than one way?
2. Write a sentence using each spelling word.
3. Write a letter to a friend. See how many spelling words can you include in the letter.
4. Can you find other words that fit the pattern of your spelling words?
