Order your class tee-shirts by October 11!
Our student designed tee-shirt is ready and available to order via Mrs. Burns's Class Media Store! Ordering closes on October 11; Shirts will be delivered to our classroom near the end of October. Thank you for supporting this student project! We have a lot a budding entrepreneurs in the Logo Group...they have already come out with suggestions for an entire line of products they want to produce!
Writer's workshop: revising and editing
In Writer's Workshop, students continued revising and editing a story this week with the help of a writing partner. Students also learned about paragraphing, and developing an exciting lead. In Third Grade, students should be able to write about a page a day. We are really working hard to write 'fast and furious'!
We will finish our narative writing unit near the end of October. Shortly, students will begin to work on a more formal narrative piece for publication. Identifying landforms
Students are working to identify landforms and bodies of water on maps, and they are preparing presentations to demonstrate their learning. Students chose the region they wanted to look at, the landform/body of water type, and the mode of presentation. Please see the project description and directions here.
Understanding division
Students worked this week to understand the difference between multiplication (missing product) and division (missing factor). We are making a class collection of student-written story problems that show both. Here are two examples by Kameron and Johnny.
A great game to play at home to reinforce the division concept is Missing Factor. The array cards students brought home a few weeks ago work great for this, too!

Our first projects are ready to be shared:
Mrs. Burns's Class Media Store, our class tee-shirts, and our class song*
Our class media store is complete, and just waiting for all of the books, apps, movies, and podcasts we will create! As we create content, it we be available for free download on our store. The media store building team consists of: Harrison, Nolan, Miya, Branka, Rocco, Luke, A.J., and Adrien. Please visit Mrs. Burns's Class Media Store often!
Next, our class logo group consists of Sara Jane, Lily, Michael, Camille, Johnny, Maddie, Tully, and Anna.. This groups has decided that to show our class unity, we should have tee-shirts with our class logo. They have designed the shirt, and have figured out the cost. Over the week-end, I will send an anonymous form via email to gauge parent interest in this...I think the cost is around $23. I've told the kids that this will not be viable if we don't have parental support. Please let me know via the anonymous form if this is something you would be willing to purchase for your child or not. Please read their letter to you below.

Finally, our class song is nearly complete! The team thought it was finished today, but due to some odd Garage Band quirkiness, it did not come out as intended. The kids will make some adjustments and publish it next week! The team consists of Emmi, Caitlin, Kaz, Will, George, Kameron, and Jack.
Collecting and cleaning seeds from
the Lincoln Native Garden
We are exploring ways to share our Native Garden with others in the area! The students and I have talked about perhaps organizing a partnership with an area school with which we can share some seedlings and knowledge from our native garden to help other kids start their own. This would be a great way for us to compare and analyze traits inherited from parents, and also study the effects of a different environment on the same types of plants. For now, we have collected and cleaned seeds with the hope of winter sowing.
Writer's workshop
This week, students worked on editing as they go, and retelling their stories to a writing partner to insure clarity and embellish details. We are learning to 'show, not tell' by adding dialogue, feelings, sights, sounds, etc. to engage the reader. Students are using a narrative writing checklist to help them become better 3rd grade writers. Click to download the checklist to help your child at home.
Michael is writing a terrific story about a game he plays at recess, and this week he used his checklist to add some interesting bits of dialogue to his story to make it more exciting!

If you were an explorer,
what would you study and why?
As we started investigating fossils, paleantologist Jason Osborne shared exploration videos, discuss why fossils are buried where they are, and shared the gear he uses. Students then responded to his question, "If you were and explorer, what would you study and why?"

Reader's workshop
In Reader's Workshop, students are learning to build comprehension by using several strategies. This week, we continued our work on predicting, and talked about retelling the big ideas of a story. Next week, we will learn how to climb the hurdle of hard words using multiple strategies. Please continue to encourage reading at home! Click to see a list of comprehension strategies we've discussed during this unit here.
We are halfway through our first read aloud, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and we all enjoy learning about Harry's adventures at Hogwarts, along with the band of characters I can never pronounce correctly. Many thanks to Jack M., who has all the names down and corrects me when I am wrong!
Beginning the week of October 2, we will participate in the Global Read Aloud! We are reading the book, The Wild Robot. We will be connecting with other classrooms around the globe via Google Hangout, Skype, blogging and social media to discuss the book.

Mystery Skype: new friends in Minnesota
Our second Mystery Skype was a lot of fun! The kids learned a lot about how to question so that we could narrow down our choices. We eventually guessed that the other class was in Minnesota! However, they won by guessing our state first. The kids very much enjoy using maps and Google Earth to explore the world! Next week, we will be working on an activity to map landforms and bodies of water using mapping skills.
Coming up next week in math:
Understanding division
Students did a nice job understanding arrays this week! Although there is not much homework, students brought home array cards and multiplication fact cards to work on. These are for practicing facts and playing the multiplication games we've learned in class, like Factor Pairs, Missing Factor, and Count and Compare. Students can also play these games online via the links: they know their student log-in information.
Next week, we start Investigation 4 of our Unit 1: Understanding Division. Students will continue to work on understanding the meaning of multiplication and learning multiplication facts, and they will also begin to develop strategies for division based on understanding the inverse relationship between multiplication and division.

Thank you for attending Open House!
Thank you for coming to the Lincoln School Open House last night! I loved spending the evening with you, and sharing my excitement for the upcoming year. If you were unable to attend, please see the Open House 2017 presentation here. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I look forward to working together!
Math Investigation 3: Arrays
Our math focus this week and next is arrays. The main ideas of this investigation are understanding the meaning of multiplication, learning multiplication facts, and understanding and working with an array/area model of multiplication. An array is an arrangement of objects in columns and rows like this:
The dimensions of this array are 3 by 4. There are three rows and four columns.
Students were introduced to arrays to represent multiplication; then used arrays to find factors and products. Students used arrays to find features of numbers and find products for the array by skip counting or using known facts.

Finally, students were introduced to the concept of area, and used one-inch squares to find the area of rectangles. Each student is making a set of array cards, and next week we will continue to work on multiplication by playing array games.
Writer's workshop
We've been working this week on using a storyteller's voice, editing our work as we go, and using a narrative writing checklist to help us set goals and improve writing. Next week, students will pick a seed idea and begin to write their best narrative story using all they've learned. I love this story about fishing by A.J.!
Good Earth Greenhouse supports
Migrating Monarchs
and the Lincoln Native Garden!
Even though the garden is beginning to fade into its autumn stage, we are always thinking of next spring! Our partners in the Lincoln Native Garden, Good Earth Greenhouse and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, are celebrating Migrating Monarchs this week-end with a special fundraiser: Good Earth will match all of the contributions made to Trailside with equal contributions to Lincoln School's Native Garden! Good Earth would like to continue to support our lessons about the importance of natural habitats in our community and all the benefits and beauty that they offer. Download the flyer and shop this week-end!
Reader's workshop
The kids continue to learn about developing a powerful reading life by using all the tools they've learned to enhance their reading. This week's focus was on comprehension, and students learned that readers understand a story by giving themselves comprehension checks, thinking about the mind-work the text is asking the reader to do (envisioning, gathering information), and predicting what will happen next based on several factors. This class LOVES to read!
Inquiry and exploration
During inquiry and exploration, we continue to focus on developing and answering essential questions. We are finishing up our first projects:
1. How can we share our creations with the world? (our class Media Store)
2. How can we tell the story of our classroom community musically? (our class song)
3. What can we create that can show our classroom unity? (our class logo)
We are hoping to reveal our finished products next week. I hope we can embark on long-term projects by mid- October. Students will be using design thinking to find a problem to solve by creating an app (see last year's app, we drew you and cause here); and also beginning Season 2 on our podcast, The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade.

Science: What do we know about fossils?
Our class is joining students from around the world as we learn and reflect with Texas explorer and paleantologist Jason Osborne via Flipgrid. This week, we answered the questions, what do you know about fossils, and what can fossils tell us? Find out more about the project here, and click below to view responses from students.
Our new droid
The kids had a great time building our new Little Bits Star Wars Droid. As with our other robots (Sphero and Dash), kids will use Swift Playgrounds to learn to operate it with code.

Migrating Monarch Celebration
We will be releasing Monarch butterflies in the Lincoln Native Garden again this year, with the help of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. All are welcome to join the FPDCC's Migrating Monarch Celebration on September 17 at Trailside Museum!
Reader's workshop
We spent the week learning how to use our reading logs to look for patterns in our reading, and working with reading partners to help each other set goals and discuss our reading. We discussed ways to read longer and stronger, and I encourage the kids to increase both reading time and pages read daily! Please encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes each evening. Our class also devised a way to share good books with each other and the world each month:
MAP testing next week
On Monday and Wednesday, Grade 3 students will have MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing. These untimed tests are taken in the classroom on our iPads, and are typically completed in about 60 minutes. Results from these tests are used to inform instruction in the classroom. On Monday, students will take the mathematics portion of the test; Wednesday will be reading.
Math: Investigation 2
The main concepts in Investigation 2 are understanding the meaning of multiplication, learning multiplication facts, and finding and understanding patterns and relationships between numbers. Using a 100 chart, students discovered patterns between multiples of 5 and 10, 3 and 6, and 2 and 4. We will continue with skip counting and 100 charts at the beginning of next week before we move into learning multiplication through arrays.
Writer's workshop
Writer's workshop at the beginning of the year can be somewhat daunting to many children, as they struggle to come up with stories to write. This week we talked about the hard parts of narrative writing and learned some strategies for what to do when writer's get stuck. At the end of the week, we began talking about using a storyteller's voice, and we used a favorite book (Come on, Rain! by Karen Hesse) to illustrate the point. We will continue to practice using a storyteller's voice, not a news reporter's voice, when we write! Ask your child to demonstrate the difference.
Inquiry and exploration
This week, we worked on some beginning ideas for developing essential questions, collaboration, and community building. Three teams chose to work on composing a class song, designing a class graphic logo, or creating a class media store. Team leaders were chosen to lead the group and update the rest of the class on the group's progress. See the logo group and the media group updates below!
Our first Mystery Skype!
We had a great time doing our first Mystery Skype with a Third Grade class somewhere in the world! Kids were in two groups, each with an important task: the question/answer group was in charge of asking the questions we crafted and answering the questions the other class asked us, and the mapping group was in charge of using the information and trying to find the other class's mystery location on a map. The other class is trying to do the same! We learned we have to be very efficient and effective communicators if we want to guess where the other class is before they guess our location. Using geographical clues, we guessed that our new friends lived in Kentucky!

Math Investigation 1: Things that come in groups
Our first investigation this week was to understand that multiplication involves repeated addition of equal groups. Students examined and identified mathematical information in multiplication such as the number of groups (factor), the number in each group (factor), and the number of objects in all (product).
We began our second investigation today, where students will define and compare sets of multiples. Students found multiples of 2, 5, and 10; and worked on noticing patterns in the multiplication. We will continue with investigation 2 next week,

Writer's Workshop: Narrative writing
Our first writing task included a 'cold write' (writing pre-assessment) to enable me to get to know your children as writers. We also began to learn strategies for finding ideas for true stories, and our first was 'Think of a person who matters to you, list small moments, choose one, and write the whole story.' Students also established their writing goals, and met with their writing partners. I am excited to see the works this bright class of writers produces!
Reader's Workshop
Each morning, our class will have Readers' Workshop for about an hour. Reader's Workshop consists of a short whole-group lesson, independent or small-group work, and finally an opportunity to share our learning. Each lesson will have a purpose, and students will apply that purpose to their independent work.
This week, we learned the importance of building a powerful reading life by finding good-fit books within reach and reading books like they are gold. We shared examples of our texts with each other, and started a reading log to keep track and see patterns in our reading.
On Wednesday, September 6, I will assess each student individually on reading fluency and comprehension. I am looking forward to learning more about your child as a reader!

Inquiry and exploration
Inquiry and exploration is a time in our classroom where student have opportunities to become immersed in a special project. Inquiry and exploration is cross-curricular project-based learning based upon student choice, and addresses many Social Science, Science, ELA, Writing, and Math Standards.
Students have been exploring our classroom, beginning to develop questions and do some groundwork for inquiry-based learning. During the year, students will have the opportunity to explore areas of interest, which I will facilitate and align with our Illinois Learning Standards. This week, students had an opportunity to 'explore with a purpose': Students will be guided to develop essential questions, evaluate sources and use evidence, communicate conclusions, and take action.
I am very, very excited to see what this year's students will do to make the world a better place!
