Writer's workshop: persuasive writing
Students have worked hard over the last few weeks to understand how using strong statements, facts, examples, and observations can persuade an audience. Students published their letters and speeches today, as well as presented them in class. I am very impressed with their hard work! Please see your child's Seesaw account to check out his/her text. Here are a few good examples!

Why is school important?
We started the week thinking about what school is, and its purpose. This is a very thought-provoking podcast, and after listening to it, I have some good questions for the team. The communications team is learning so much every week!

Writer's workshop:
persuasive writing is almost complete
The students are working on finishing up thier persuasive speeches, and are looking forward to presenting them next week. As we wrap up this unit, students are editing and revising their work. I think they are excited for the next unit, which is focused on fairy tales. Students will be writing their own, and they are really excited!
App dev: we are sooo close!
Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop is coming along! This week, we changed the iPad icon (left), the team finished up writing descriptions and finding backgrounds for the yoga poses, and created calming music to play in the background of the app while the user is doing yoga. The kids are trying to write code to add the music, as well as code a timer.
Westward Expansion
Literature Circle final projects
The students created some very nice work to showcase what they know about the Westward Expansion novel they read. Students chose to do animation, movies, and even a Kahoot! quiz. Please check out your child's work on Seesaw. In the coming days, I will post all work to the Westward Expansion project website. Until then, here are a few really creative submissions!
Math: Solving division problems
We continued to work on multilication and division problems this week, with an emphasis on division. The kids are learning how to think about missing factor problems as division, and use strategies like breaking an array up in to parts or using known facts as a basis to solve unknowns, Next week, we will start the final investigation of the unit: Multiplying by Multiples of 10.

The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade
We have another two-episode extravaganza! Last week, we were so lucky to speak to Mary Anne Brown, former Executive Director of Hephzibah. Our question was, 'How does our community help children in need?' We were very inspired by the conversation, and have some great ideas about how we can help in the future!
This week, our classmate Luke from the App Dev team suggested we speak to a chef to find out, 'What does it take to make a restaurant successful?' We were so happy to welcome Jennifer Cox, Vice President of Culinary Operations for Levy Restaurants to The Chat!

Writer's workshop: determining a 'seed' idea for our persuasive speech
We will finish our persuasive writing unit before spring break, and students are choosing a 'seed' idea: an idea they are passionate about and will grow into a persuasive speech. All of the ideas are very interesting, and I am looking forward to hearing some very convincing speeches!

Simple machines:
how can we get the tiger out of the moat?
Students are finally building their machine to get the tiger out of the moat! We learned about complex machines (a machine made of 2 or more simple machines), and students are now building complex machines to complete their task. Check out this design by Will, Tully, and Anna!
Math:
the relationship between multiplication and division
As we work through Unit 5, we are practicing multiplication and division in a variety of ways. Students are working with arrays, story problems, and visual representations. As we continue, I am adding some area and perimeter 'refreshers' to help them solidify these concepts from Unit 4. Feel free to explore the math games on Pearson Realize at home!
Westward Expansion final project
The students are busy creating some incredible presentations for their Westward Expansion Literature Circles final project. Some are doing animation, some are making a Kahoot quiz, and some are making an iMovie, I am very excited to see how these turn out next Friday, March 16! Check out the details of the project here.
App Dev team update
The App Dev team is working collaboratively to finish the Mood Monster website, as well as finish the final photographs and text for the moods.
