The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade
We have another two-episode extravaganza! Last week, we were so lucky to speak to Mary Anne Brown, former Executive Director of Hephzibah. Our question was, 'How does our community help children in need?' We were very inspired by the conversation, and have some great ideas about how we can help in the future!
This week, our classmate Luke from the App Dev team suggested we speak to a chef to find out, 'What does it take to make a restaurant successful?' We were so happy to welcome Jennifer Cox, Vice President of Culinary Operations for Levy Restaurants to The Chat! Tune in to The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade every Friday. Reading: understanding plot
After reading 'Because of Winn-Dixie', we worked together to construct the details leading up to the climax and what occured after. Students then practiced constructing story mountains for their Westward Expansion novels.
Persuasive writing
Students reviewed the persuasive writing checklist and met with writing partners to get feedback on their persuasive speeches. Students are working hard to address their audience directly through questions and answering anticipated concerns, developing a strong thesis, and providing good reasons to back their claim or idea. Here's Luke's speech.
Math
We started our 5th unit (Cube Patterns, Arrays, and Multiples of 10), which further studies the relationship between multiplication and division. The main ideas for this unit include
- Understanding the meaning and structure of multiplication and division and the relationship between them
- Solving multiplication and division problems, including multi-step problems and problems with multiple solutions
- Learning multiplication facts
- Making sense of multiplying multiples of 10 by one-digit numbers
SImple machines
Students worked together to create a vehicle and a pendulum. Emmi explains one use for a pendulum.
Student-led conferences
Spring conferences are coming up in 2 weeks! As in the fall, we will be doing student-led conferences. Your kids are busy preparing for the meeting, collecting evidence of learning and setting goals for the rest of the school year.. Bringing your child is not mandatory, but I HIGHLY encourage this. It is a great way to demonstrate the responsibility of students to take ownership of their own learning, as well as practice for 4th grade student-led conferences. Plus, the kids are always proud and eager to talk about what they've learned. We can't wait to share all the good things we've been doing!
App dev: teaching what we've learned
The App Dev team is so excited to share what they've learned about coding with others, so we invited all the 1st grade classes to visit our classroom. The students showed the younger kids the apps they have created, and then taught them a coding lesson in Tynker.
The Chat:
What can we learn from the previous Chat team?
We've completed our 14th episode! This week, three Chat team members from last year visited for a fun session to give advice.

Two episodes of The Chat!
2/9 What can we do to keep our hearts healthy?2/16 How has video changed learning?
Last week, we welcomed special guest Riley Norman from the American Heart Association to find out what we can do to keep our hearts healthy.
This week, we were lucky to speak to Philipe Carvalho, Owner and Creative Director of Mirar Productions. He discussed how video has changed the way we learn with The Chat team.

Math
To finish our unit on perimeter, area, and polygons, our focus was on characteristics of triangles and quadrilaterals. Students learned to describe and classify several quadrilaterals and triangles. Unit 5 is titled 'Cube Patterns, Arrays, and Multiples of 10'. This unit develops students’ ideas about counting and quantity, place value and the structure of the base-10 number system, the meaning of operations with whole numbers, the development of computational fluency, and generalizations about numbers and operations.
We will focus on the meaning and structure of multiplication and division and the relationship between them, solving multiplication and division problems, multiplying by multiples of 10, and learning the remaining multiplication facts to ??×??.

Mindfulness
Testing season and school in general can be very stressful for some kids. We try to practice mindfulness in our classroom when possible. Last week, we had a visit from local resident Barb deHaan, who led our class in some mindfulness exercises.
App Dev team update: creating apps in Swift Playgrounds, Tynker, and Scratch, Jr.!
The team worked to create and code their own games using their favorite coding platforms, Here's two awesome examples: Dragon Quest (New and Improved) by Kaz and Save the Penguin by Anna. If your child is working on the App Dev team, see your child's work on Seesaw
Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop is coming along! We are still taking photos for the individual yoga interfaces. We hope to have the app ready in spring.
Persuasive writing:
considering our audience
Last week, we discussed developing a strong thesis, and identifying reasons and examples to support a thesis statement. This week, students learned the importance of considering the audience, and learned some ways to address the audience directly through writing: asking questions, and mentioning possible concerns or worries of the reader. I think our persuasive writing unit will be our best work yet! The kids seem to have a knack for persuasion.
Art Appreciation: Frida Kahlo
As special thank you to Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Leibundguth for sharing artist Frida Kahlo with our class! After a wonderful story and short history of the artist, the parents led the kids in a very fun self-portrait creation workshop. It was very fun, and we all loved the hands-on opportunity!
Reader's workshop:
Westward expansion literature circles continue
We are nearing the end of our Westward Expnasion literature Circles! This week, in addition to studying the character, we talked about cause and effect, and the story 'mountain': as characters move toward the climax, he/she encounters hurdles along the way. Next week, we will continue to look at this, and students will create their own story 'mountain' for their novel.

In what ways does being famous affect your life?
We were so happy and grateful to welcome Food Network's Jeff Mauro to The Chat. Mr. Mauro was extremely gracious, and spent much time answering our questions. We were joined by Mrs. Briggs's class, and it was so much fun! The kids had incredible questions and we learned a lot about the effects of fame on one's life.

Designing a wheel and axle machine
How can we build a machine to get a tiger out of a moat? Students are working on building simple machines to accomplish this task, starting with wheel and axle.
More area activities
Students worked week this week to figure area by decomposing large shapes into manageable pieces. Take a look at this example from Luke:
Valentine's Party
Please join us on Valentine's Day! Our classroom party will be Wednesday, February 14 at 2:15PM. The theme of the party is games, and our room parents have been working very hard to plan another outstanding event. If you would like to volunteer, please contact me, and I will connect you with one of our terrific room parents!
Writing a persuasive speech
Students worked on thinking of problems and imaging solutions, as well as writing a big, bold thesis statement for their persuasive argument. Here's a great example from Nolan:
Reader's workshop:
Character studies and theme
We are working on closely studying characters; especially in our read aloud text, Because of Winn-Dixie and the Westward Expansion literature circles. We have also been looking at theme. Our response to reading this week involved answering questions about both. I will post these to your child's Seesaw account over the week-end.
A note about response to reading: we will work the entire year on thinking and responding critically about reading. This skill takes a while to learn, and kids generally have trouble demonstrating this in the beginning. The good thing is, and what I stress in class, is that we practice to get better. I am so proud of the perserverence of these kids! Take a look at Lily's really great response.

Writer's workshop:
introduction to persuasive speech
Our first lesson in our persuasive speech/opinion writing unit was to do a quick-write speech to try to persuade someone that we need more robotics in school. The kids did a terrific job!
Museum of Science and Industry
Our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry was a lot of fun, and the kids learned lots about simple machines. When we returned, I asked the students to create a presentation that shows what they learned.
Math: finding and understanding area
The goal for this investigation is that students will understand area as the space within the perimeter of a 2-D shape, and use a variety of strategies to find the area of 2-D figures using U.S. standard and metric units. Students explored tetraminoes, triangles, and square tiles to begin to understand these concepts.
Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop website
in progress
The App Dev team welcomed new members Branka, Maddie, Lily, Miya, and Kameron! The team has been busy this week designing the Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop website. The website will be unveiled in in the Spring!
Reader's workshop: response to reading
We had our first response to reading for this literature circle session. The kids need more practice, particularly on writing a topic sentence and conclusion, but are beginning to understand how to cite examples from the text. Here is the response from the group reading The Oregon Trail Dairy of Hattie Campbell. Check Seesaw for your child's work!

Westward Expansion literature circles
The students began their first literature circles this week, and the topic is Westward Expansion. The students will be learning all about the trip west on the Oregon Trail. Students received one of three novels: Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie: the Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell, 1847; Dear Levi: Letters From the Overland Trail; or Westward Home: Joshua's Oregon Trail Diary. We are all looking forward to this novel study!
Our published informational texts!
We've published our informational texts! Please check your child's Seesaw account to read his or her excellent book. Here are some outstanding examples below. Up next: persuasive writing!
How did the Native Americans influence our modern communities and culture?
We have wrapped up our study of Native Americans and how they have influenced our modern culture. Unfortunately, the kids have a bit of work left to do. I'd like them to get a better understanding about how the Native American way of life had such a lasting affect on our culture today. The students made their movies and wrote their research, but I asked them to revisit this on Monday. Until then, check out their work here.

Welcome back!
Happy New Year, and welcome back! I am so excited to get back to school and be together again. Here are some things that are coming up in the near future:
- Social Studies: we will finish our Native American Project by editing our green screen movies that explain how the Native Americans of the Great Lakes region have influenced our modern communities and culture. If you have not checked out your child’s work on this project, please do so here. Each student studied one tribe with his/her group, but had his/her own research to present on his/her page. Ask your child which tribe and topic your child studied.
- Science: we will begin studying forces and interactions near the end of January, and our studies will include a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry to see a simple machines exhibit.
- Writing: we are finishing up our informational writing, and move into persuasive writing the week of January 22.
- Reader’s Workshop: students will continue to learn skills and strategies together as a group, then practice analyzing and responding to a variety of texts in a small group model using literature and information circles. Our next Unit of Study is Character Studies. Our small group work from next week through February will focus on Westward Expansion. After, we will choose texts based upon three areas of student interest (from student feedback).
- Math: we have begun Unit 4, and the students have the opportunity for a lot of hands-on work and movement in this unit. Our first investigation focused on understanding the concept of perimeter of polygons. Next week, students will expand the concept to begin to understand area.
- Inquiry and Exploration: The Communications team remains curious and will continue producing The Chat. We are looking forward to an exciting second half of the year with lots of great guests! The App Development team will continue to work to produce our app, Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop! Students will also have the opportunity to switch groups at the end of January, if they choose.
This is us creating.
I am so proud of these self-directed, driven, collaborative, and curious kids! The atmosphere in our classroom is very active and enthusiastic.
Field trip:
Museum of Science and Industry
The Third Grade classes are kicking off a unit on Simple Machines with a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on Tuesday, January 23. I sent a permission slip home this week. Please return as soon as possible! If you are interested in chaperoning, please let me know- we need 4-5 parents to accompany us.
The Chat welcomes
Newberry Award-winning author
Steve Sheinkin
The Chat team was very happy to secure a last-minute interview with Newberry Award winning author, Steve Sheinkin! Mr. Sheinkin (author of many children and young adult books such as Abigail Adams, Pirate of the Carribean and Abraham Lincoln, Pro Wrestler) was visiting Lincoln on his book tour.

Mood Monster's Yoga Workshop
The App Dev team worked on a few things this week: first, the team had to decide whether or not we would charge money for the app or would it be free. We decided free is best. We may also raise money at the time of release for a children's charity (via Crowdrise), but that will be decided later.
Also, the team designed custom icons for each mood and chose a font for the app. I am currently working in Xcode to write the code to match the specifications the students produce in Swift Playgrounds and Tynker.

Students finished up their first informational writing piece. We will be wrapping up this unit after winter break. Next week, we will start our final piece, and finish the final draft after break. I think we are excited to move into opinion writing!
Winter seed sowing in the Native Garden
We planted the seeds we collected in the fall! The seeds will stay outside in their plastic containers until spring, when we hope they will sprout. We are sharing the Lincoln Native Garden by starting seeds for a local school or organization so we can collaborate and study growth in different environments. Our iBook about the Lincoln Native Garden will be published within the next few weeks.

Native American Project
How did the Native Americans of the Great Lakes region influence modern communities and culture? Check out our research! Students are still exploring information and making connections. Students presented their work so far and listened to and critiqued others. We will finish the written research before winter break; in January, each tribe will create and present a movie about their tribe's influence.
Writer's workshop
This week, our writers practiced writing a good introduction: writers can ask a question, start with a quote, or state something exciting. The kids learned about researching facts and balancing ideas. Students also worked on elaboration by adding details and checking their work against the informational writing checklist.
The work in this unit up until now has been a learning draft; next, we will begin the final portion of the unit, which will be writing an informational text from beginning to end, using everything learned in this unit.

Reader's workshop
As we continue to investigate nonfiction narratives, students chose biographies and read them like narrative stories and also to learn information. We looked for and discussed character traits and motivations, setting, and problem/solution. We also revisited what to do when coming across an unknown word (use context clues, check to see if word is like a known word). At the same time, students are discovering the main ideas of theie texts, and looking for supporting details. We are learning to read with the lens of reading information. Here is a chart of the points we worked on this week.
Math
We began a new investigation this week: Finding the Difference. This investigation focuses on travel stories, and students are trying to find the difference between two numbers using addition and subtraction. We are using number lines to determine distance travelled between points and figure distance riddles. This has proven to be rather tricky for some of the students, so we will spend a bit more time on the idea. Here is an example:
First, one must find and mark '20 less than 100' and '52 more than 100' on a number line. Find the distances between 100 and these numbers. 20 less than 100 is 80; 52 more than 100 is 152.
Next, we are asked to find the difference between the two numbers (152 and 80), and write an addition and subtraction equation to show the difference.
Students are also learning to tell time using analog and digital clocks, and will soon move into determining elapsed time.
App Development team update
The App Dev team met via Google Hangouts with our mentors in New York this week to discuss the progress we've made on our app. Although the team really wants to add animation to the app, Our mentors Dov and Isaac cautioned against it: animation is too difficult for beginners to implement correctly. We will take their advice! Currently, the app is in a preliminary state, but we have a good foundation to work with.
Is there still more wildlife to discover?
Join the Chat team as they ask, "Is there more wildlife to discover on Earth?" Our special guest this week is Irene Flebbe from The Forest Preserve of Cook County.

Winter sowing for seed sharing:
containers needed!
Next week, we will be sowing the seeds we collected from our native garden. We need plastic produce containers (like those Emmi and Sara Jane are showing in the photo). If you have any of these, we will be happy to use them! We will plant next Friday, so please send any you are willing to give before then.
The containers will be filled with organic soil and native seeds. They will be left outside to over-winter, and should produce seedlings in the spring (fingers crossed). These seedlngs will be donated to a school in need of a native garden. We love to share!

App development team
We've been working very hard this week on learning to code using Swift Playgrounds, Tynker, and Tickle. Next week, we are meeting with our New York mentors to share our progress and get their input. We are excited! Here is a snippet of code that Adrien created that will hopefully go in our app.

Math: rounding and place value
of three-digit numbers
Students worked to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 this week. We also played a really fun game called Capture 300. Each day starts with 10-minute math, which is a short exercise and number talk to get the students thinking flexibly about numbers. Students are learning different strategies for addition and subtraction, but especially breaking numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones. Doing math this way builds foundational skills and helps students think about math more flexibly!
Reading: exploring narrative non-fiction
Our focus this week has been narrative non-fiction reading, and we've used the biograpy of Jack Ezra Keats as an example text. Students have been thinking about reading biographies like they read stories: identifying characters (as well as traits and motivations), setting, problem(s), and resolution. Students also worked in with a reading partner to summarize the text, focusing on telling only the important points.
Writing: implementing different structures, connecting ideas and facts
Our writers have been practicing implementing different structures, as well as balancing the addition of facts and ideas in their informational writing. We also practiced researching facts using books and reputable websites. Here are three great examples of 3rd grade writing from Sara Jane, Anna, and Camille!

Native American Project
Students continue to gather research on their Native American tribe. Currently, their work is not visible outside of District 90, but will be published on December 22. Please check out the Native Americans of the Great Lakes, and ask your child what area he/she is working on!
