Weather around the worldWhat type of weather is expected during a particular season? What is the climate in a particular region? What are some potential weather hazards, and what can humans do to reduce the impact of these weather hazards? We will be taking a closer look at these issues as we work on our Weather Around the World project. Students chose 30 cities across the globe for which we will be gathering and charting data over the next 30 days. Check out our project, and see what cities your child will be tracking with his or her team. Why do we need a government? We were thrilled to welcome Village of River Forest President, Cathy Adduci to our school this week to talk about our local government! The Chat team had some great questions for her, and she was a very interesting guest. Tune in to The Chat with Mrs. Burns's Third Grade every Friday. Don't forget to subscribe to The Chat via Apple Podcasts. Click here to let us know what you think, and suggest guests and topics for upcoming shows! Math: Fair shares and fractions on number linesWe started Unit 6 this week, which focuses on fractions. I think this is a fun unit, and the students will really enjoy it. However, next week we are taking the math portion of PARCC, so we will continue where we left off after we finish testing. Please see the Family Letter for the first investigation, Sharing Brownies. Writer's workshop: Fairy talesWe began exploring our next writing unit: Fairy Tales! The kids are already very excited to adapt known fairy tales and create new ones. Since PARCC reading/English Language Arts testing is complete, we will resume reader's and writer's workshops next week. The Lincoln Native Garden is awakening! As the garden continues to wake up, we will be working on our plan to share our resources with another organization. We are so excited to share some seedlings and what we've learned with others. Reading: Information circlesWe've begun our next unit in reading, which is focused on 'research clubs'. The students have chosen a topic based upon their interests, and then formed research clubs (information circles) around those topics. The class decided they wanted to study animals, coding, and sports. Students spent some time this week creating essential questions to study in their group, and will vote on one question to study each week. This week, the students decided upon these questions to explore: Sports: "If you are a good teammate, does that mean you are good at the game?" Animals: "Why do animals become extinct?" Coding: "How has coding changed the way we see the world?" Together, we will choose resources for the research, and each student will have a role (similar to literature circles). At the end of the week, students will individually do a written response their readings and discussion. Erin's Law presentationErin’s Law, House Bill 6193 was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades pre-K through 12. District 90 researched best practices and programs for delivering this instruction. We reviewed several recommended programs and visited several area school districts to observe programs in action. We are very pleased to share that Victor Pacini will be visiting Lincoln School on May 2 to deliver his program entitled, Be Seen and Heard©, a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program. Below is a link to information regarding his presentation. Please contact Mr. Godfrey if you have other specific questions or if you prefer your child not participate. https://www.victorpacini.com/peace-of-mind/ Upcoming events
